Some Research Notes on Cynthia Calvert and her son Alexander Calvert Alexander Calvert is found in records as Colvard, Colbard, Colvert and of course, Calvert. In 1840 he is Colbard in the US Census of Henderson Co.,Ky., age 70-80. (born between 1760 and 1770. Most records show his b/d as 1767. Besides Alexander, Cynthia had another son Augustine or George Augustine or Augustine G, but I believe the former is the correct order and he I found in SC. If Alexander was born 1767 as family genealogies indicate then using that date Cynthia would have been born about 1747 which would fit the age George Calvert the Younger coming to the age of majority at about age 20 ie, b 1723(this presumes that Alexander is the eldest son of Cynthia). From this surmise then, looking backwards, the The Children of George the Younger are at least: Cynthia Calvert John Calvert George Calvert Levi Calvert Edith Calvert Cynthia died about 1810 or shortly after. It is at this time that I believe that Alexander removes to Keyntucky where we find him later and still later in White County, IL. Alexander Colvard according to LDS shows Alexander b 1767 he married Sarah Johnson. Sarah in the Census of 1850 in Union Twp(Sarah Colvard b 1786 according to some records...considerably younger than Alexander, and probably a second wife, and, again LDS determines that this second marriage was about 1821. Some researchers indicate that Alexander died in Henderon KY but his wife moved to Union Co IL. The reason that I think that Alexander may have been in another southern state for a period of time is that I found a George Augustine there and some family stories indicate that Alexander also lived in the south for a time perhaps but that may be incorrect data. I have not been able to find more.. Alexander may be a "John", ie, John Alexander who may possibly tie into the John A. Colbert found in AL b 1825, the same John A Colbert found in Morgan County, IL in the IL State Census of 1855, thus Laree Lee, who found this record and was digging for information on John A. Colbert, a 'Traveling Calvert' akin to Joseph Calvert, apparently of Cumberland who removed to GA then to TN and finally up into Pope and White Counties IL. Alexander is not a common name used by Calverts in great number but we know that Reuben Jr had son Alexander b 1792 PW Co VA, I had found Alexander Calvert (Colbert) of Somerset, father of Isaac who was born 1747/48. This Alexander of Somerset would have been born approximately 1720-25 as he is marrying Mary Wheeler at Coventry Church of the same Parish, Somerset County, MD-Eastern Shore. So to summarize, Alexander Calvert, in Bedford Co., VA goes to PW Co VA with his mother Cynthia Calvert's power of attorney to represent his mother's interest. This is 1804. John Pennell Calvert Jr, son of John Calvert b 1766 who married 2nd Esther Jones, was born about 1797 and he married Edith Beale. was looking at John Calvert Jr Pennell) who married Edith. John A Colbert had two brothers according to my conversations with Shirley Meznarich: William and James both born about 1820. Another reseearcher notes that a William Calvert moved into Pike County IL who was b OH in 1832. That family moved into Meigs County, Ohio in 1842. NOTES: Book 2, page 397, 24 Sept 1804. Cynthia Calvert of the County of Bedford and State of Virginia to her son, Alexander Calvert of Bedford County, power of attorney " to call upon John Calvert of Prince William County, the administrator of my father, The Alexander Given name intrigues me as well. note the Alexander Calvert of Somerset who married Mary Wheeler in 1744 Coventry Parish. Isaac, William, Alexander Neal and Betty are in birth records, same parish(There are more children). William marries Bridgett Howard, this is my opinion (not proven). He moved west but Isaac and Alexander Neal stay in Somerset Eastern shore(various surnames of record. Alexander and wife Mary Wheeler never leave. Note the surname Wheeler has other ties(Anastasia Wheeler, for example). This name has caught my attention also. There was no one else in the accepted Calvert lines from William, PSOM who has the name Alexander. Marriage of Alexander Calvert and other records Aug. 16, 1805; Alex Colvert & Nancey Mayhew; Alex Mayhew, Surety. Alexander left Bedford County between 1812 and 1815 for Allen County, Kentucky. I think it's possible that Cynthia may have removed to Kentucky or Tennesse about this same time.. I see the following Allen County Tax List entries that tie the two (Alex and A George) together(Augustine George). 1819 Colbert, Alexander 100a Tramel Fk - also Colbert, A. George 82a Tramel Fk. 1820 Calbert, Alexander 100a B. Creek PATENT - also Calbert, A. George 82a Tramel Fk. 1821 Calbert, Alexander 100a Tramel Cr. - also Colbert, George 180a Tramel Cr 1822 Colbert, Alexander 100a Tramel Fk. 2 ch aged 4-14 - also Colbert, A. George 180a Tramel Fk 2 ch aged 4-14 1823 Colbert, Alexander 100a Tramel Cr. - also Colbert, A. George 180a Tramel Cr. It is observed that if Cynthia had not filed her power of attorney to represent her interests in the estate of her Father, George Calvert the Younger, she might never have been a "known" Calvert nor ever connected with her father George. A similar problem exists with Edith Calvert who also is likely a daughter of George who was the son of George Calvert b 1694 who married Constant Barton, brother of John Calvert of Deephole Farm and both John of Deephole Farm and GEorge Calvert Jr., were sons of George Calvert b c 1668 who married three times. Family Researcher Laree Lee provides speculation with coincidental evidence that George Calvert the Younger's wife was Synthia Jane Harrison, due to the Calvert marriage to Sythia Elizabeth Short. The relationship may be more critically important when the brother of George Calvert b 1694 is added to the complexity of research. See the link at this site for the "Calvert Alias Harrison Saga" which deals with John Calvert, his marriages and the two sets of Orphans. Nicklin did not address this linkage when he published his Dejure line of Calverts through John of Deephole farm. Nicklin was worried that George Calvert was an Alias Harrison -- which indeed, the son George associated with John of Deephole farm, was indeed. In the 1785 Prince William Deed Book W-245, George Calvert to John Check. No release by a wife. Maryland Historical Magazine, Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore, Vol XVI, December, 1921 No. 4. Two deeds recently sent me from Prince William County, Virginia, indicate that the wife of John Calvert (d. 1739), ......, was Jane, and not Elizabeth, Harrison. The first deed speaks of "Burr Calvert alias Harrison, son of Jane Harrison . . . . of Westmoreland County." The Marriages of John Calvert are part of the mystery: Three wives? Elizabeth Harrison, daughter of Benjamin III, Mary Gosling whom O'Gorman posited with strong logic, but then Jane Harrison, sister of Burr is found to be John's wife in a land record. The book "Five Generations of the Burr Harrison Family of Virginia" published by Heritage Books as well as Ella Foye O'Gorman's Descendants of Virginia Calverts both deal with the mystery and controversy of the Alias Harrisons. From "History of White County, Illinois" , White County Historical Society, 1883 p. 828 Alexander Callvert (deceased) was born April 23, 1783, in Virginia, and was a son of Mary Callvert. He married Nancy Mahew, who was born in 1790". I find it interesting that his father's name is not mentioned. If Cynthia was also known as "Mary" it would open some new avenues for searching. Her two known children were apparently born in Bedford County so she moved there before 1783 which would have made her about 18 and is living near one of the Francis Calverts, perhaps moving there to be near him, probably a brother. Francis was in the Taxlist for Bedford County in 1783 along with Jacob and again Francis was there 1789 to 1800. |
