A brief introduction to this mysterious John Colbert who was a Calvert of Prince William County, VA.
Much of this material was gathered by Laree McDaniel Lee in researching the Calvert / Colbert mystery for Descendant Larry Colbert. Please see also, the article in the Monthly Newsletter at calvertgenealogy.net – Brick Walls.
John Calvert/Colbert was born in the period of 1784-1791. This was determined by analyzing US Census data. In all cases his birth is indicated as Virginia and in one case, Prince William County. This provides us a view of John Colbert’s birthdate as plus / minus and of 7 years, with a median date of 1787. His wife Catherine Lynn’s census ages are more consistent. It appears from analysis of Census data that an appropriate approximation of Catherine’s birth date is 1798. It may have been that John Colbert married
Once before he married Catherine.
DNA evidence supplied by a descendant of John Colbert shows that he was John Calvert who married Cathrine Lynn, and signed his name as "Calvert" on a land deed in Prince William Co., Va. John Colbert, may be hereafter referred to by either surname. He migrated from Virginia to Fayette Co., Pa. What is interesting is that this was land that was left to the Lynn children, by their father Ezekiel Lynn who was the son of Michael Lynn and his unknown and un-named wife. Moses Lynn, the other person on the deed, was the brother of Ezekiel Lynn.
Moses Lynn had previously inherited 100 acres from his father, Michael Lynn’s as proven by Michael Lynn’s Will, dated April of 1805. Michael Lynn, left his son, Moses Lynn, land upon which one of the Jesse Calverts of the Prince William County Calverts had previously lived. More than one Jesse Calvert is known to have lived in Prince William Co., Va. From various secondary records we know that they were father and son. There is a third possibility as well. However, by this time Jesse Calvert Sr., born 1740 Prince William Co., Va., had died by 1802 Prince William Co.,Va., Jesse Calvert Sr. appears to be the most likely candidate.
A closer scrutiny of the land transactions will be necessary but this much is known: The land description in Michael Lynn's will was owned by one of the Jesse Calverts of the county. This land is then acquired by the Lynn family and is the land documented in the will of Michael Lynn. More investigation is needed to determine which Jesse Calvert owned the land. For further information please check “The Lynn Family of Prince William Co., Va.,” online. Please note that this page attributes John Calvert who married Cathrine Lynn, to Lemuel Colbert. This is incorrect. John, the son of Lemuel Colbert and Phebe Blankenship, is residing in the home of Christopher Walker, in the 1850 Pittsylvania census and he is enumerated John Colbert age 47 so born circa 1803, a laborer, born Virginia. The age’s differences alone are telling btw these two different John Colberts.
What is important is that DNA shows that John Colbert is a Calvert, he is in the area of the Calverts descended from George Calvert b 1668, accepted son of William Calvert, PSOM who drowned in the Wicomico River, in MD in 1682. When examining the land reocrds, Jesse Calvert of the Calverts who descend from
George owned the land that Michael Lynn passed down to his son Moses, thus tying the Calverts and
Lynn’s together.
Family Researchers are still seeking verification via primary source records attempting to identify the parentage of John Colbert who married Catherine Lynn. We do know this: He was a Calvert of Prince William County, probably a grandson of Jesse Calvert sr B 1740 in Prince William County.

From census data John Calvert's estimated birth is btw 1784-1791 probably born in Prince William Co.,Va., Cathrine Lynn's estimated birth is btw 1798 -1805 their age vary through the various recorded Census.
PWC Deed Book 13 page 129 dated 2-8-1833, we find that the widow of Ezekiel Lynn, Levy, who later married Charles Cornwell in 1832, and her children sell to Moses Lynn, 70 acres left to Ezekiel Lynn, by his father Michael Lynn. Children named are.

John Calvert was the son of George Calvert

Although this census might fit this John Calvert, it does not fit Cathrine Lynn's age per her census' there was 10 years difference in John and Cathrine's ages, perhaps John Calvert was married before he married Catherine Lynn. John Calvert's eldest son Henry Calvert as being born 1817. The earliest age for Catherine (Lynn) Calvert is 1795. Using this birthdate, she would be 23 at the time of the birth of his birth. If the census is reflecting the daughter, Catherine Colbert, age 14 born Ohio, in John Colbert's 1870 census, then he has named a daughter for his mother. Henry is the only child, showing children born in Ohio.
Another John Calvert in the 1810 PW CO VA census but this was the son of Humphrey Calvert Sr., his son John Calvert was married to Elizabeth [--?--] and he died by 1815.
What is odd is that it appears there is no John Calvert/Colbert/Colvert in the 1820 census? Levinia Lynn, who is Lavinia (Davis) Lynn, daughter of Thomas and Ruth Davis, and widow of Ezekiel Lynn Sr. is present in the Census of 1820. The following details the Lynn Family as it relates to John Colbert who married Catherine Lynn. Ezekiel Lynn Sr.,was born aft 1765 and the son of Michael Lynn, his wife Lavinia Davis was born 1767 per her 1860 census.

Enoch Calvert is the son of Jesse Calvert born 1810 in Preston Co.,West Virginia. Jesse was the son of Enoch Calvert Jr., and Anne Jackson. Enoch Calvert Jr., son of Enoch Calvert Sr., born ca 1758 in Prince William Co.,Va., to John Calvert who died by 1788, son of George Calvert the Younger and Constance Barton.

Although this census might fit this John Calvert, it does not fit Cathrine Lynn's age per her census' there was 10 years difference in John and Cathrine's ages, perhaps John Calvert was married before??? I show John Calvert's eldest son Henry Calvert as being born 1817, the earliest age I have for Cathrine (Lynn)Calvert is 1795 she would be 23 at this Henry Calvert's birth so clearly old enough to be his mother and if that is his daughter Cathrine Colbert age 14 born Ohio, in John Colbert's 1870 census he has named a daughter for his mother, Henry is the only child, showing children born in Ohio.
Laree Lee found another John Calvert in the 1810 PW CO VA census who was the son of Humphrey Calvert Sr.. This John Calvert was married to Elizabeth_____and he died by 1815. I have Humphrey's family group and sorted them out.
Laree Lee, researching this John Colbert did not find any John Calvert,Colbert,Colvert in the 1820 census? She noted that she found Levinia Lynn, who is Lavinia (Davis) Lynn, daughter of Thomas and Ruth Davis, and widow of Ezekiel Lynn Sr. The following is what I have gathered up on the Lynn Family. Ezekiel Lynn Sr. was born aft 1765 and the son of Michael Lynn, his wife Lavinia Davis was born 1767 per her 1860 census.

An additional on this John Calvert, he is showing by census' to be born as early as 1784 and as late as 1791.
Larry uses an estimated date of 1786.
In John Bailey Calvert Nicklin's Index of Calverts show that Obediah Calvert Sr., had a son John Calvert born ca 1785. This is the year that Obed's 1st wife Mary died. That being the case, it is possible to
Model John Colbert proven to be Calvert as most likely the son of Obed Calvert Sr. b 1785/6 with his
Second wife who remains unknown.
