CALVERTS OF CUMBRIA, ENGLAND

We hope you will look at this list of Calverts from Cumbria, England.  Cumbria lies to the north of Lancashire and bordering Yorkshire to the west and North along the Irish Sea. For all Calvert researchers who are seeking origins in Ireland or England the gathered Calvert surnames (via any spelling derivative) provide an indication that a close examination of American Colonials and the peoples from whom they originate may very well be among the Calverts of these records.

This may very well be true of Calvert families who immigrated from either England or Ireland but are among the Calverts whose Research has reached a brick wall. There is at least a modicum of research which might lead from certain commonly accepted historical Calverts who were presumed to descend from one of the Calverts Lord Batlimore or his immediate kith and kin, to identifying them as being descended from other Calverts of Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria.

One noteworth family is that of Cornelius Calvert b 1706, Sea Captain of Lancaster on the Irish Sea—Lancashire. He settled in Norfolk VA and all ten of his sons also became Sea Captains. Some of the Family researchers of Cornelius, have concluded that in his case, the Calvert surname is a derivative of Calverly, an adjacent and related family to the Calverts but not Kin.

Having descendants of Cornelius participate in the DNA study will affirm that their DNA does not match the existing samples of DNA from various collected Calvert lines. If it does match, then these descendants are indeed Calvert and grouped accordingly. It is also possible that the DNA would match the Calverly family of England.

After digging into the Cumbria records, I am not sure that I agree with the assessment that Cornelius and his descent are Calverly. The reason for this is the number of Calverts who are in records in Lancashire and Cumbria not to mention Yorkshire—even a Cornelius in an early Yorkshire record.

Another example is well known to Calvert researchers who are trying to identify the parents of William Calvert of Maryland, b 1757 who married Elizabeth Nod(d)ing. He also might come from one of these Calverts whom I found when doing general research by reading transcripted and excerpted records from various sources.

CalvertGeenealogy.net needs a project volunteer to tackle enlisting the aid of the descendants of Cornelius Calvert and obtaining multiple samples of DNA. This effort should include families still in England..
